Seasonal Stress: Tips
to Manage Holiday Anxiety
The demands of decorating, gift-buying, and hosting
relatives often bring on seasonal stress for many.
According to the American Psychological Association, stress
is often described as feeling worried, overwhelmed or run-down.
Seasonal stress due to demands on our time, money or family/work
expectations can usually be managed with a few healthy behaviors. Here are some simple tips to remember:
1) Set Expectations
Match your gift-giving with
your budget. Create a list and stick with it!
2) Schedule Time for Yourself
Plan ahead for healthy meals,
get regular sleep and exercise. Take a moment for yourself (read and book,
listen to music). Don’t spend all your extra time shopping!
3) Start Connecting
Connecting with others helps
decrease depression. Focus on family traditions or create new ones. Give back
to the community and you will feel better yourself.
4) Maintain Perspective
Find the positive. Remember
the reason for the season. Avoid blowing projects or events out of perspective.
Be thankful for the small things and keep a sense of humor!
If your seasonal stress worsens or these simple tips don’t
help, know when to seek further support.
