Barnstormers Tour soars through Kansas
GREAT BEND, Kansas, June 23, 2008 – A piece of American aviation history is flying through Kansas this week with stops in Great Bend and Wichita.
Sixteen of the country’s earliest aircraft are taking part in what’s called the American Barnstormers Tour.
Pilots of antique aircraft find flying them essential to keeping history alive.
“That's part of the idea of the tour, just for people to have a chance to see the historic airplanes that were significant in the development of American aviation,” said pilot Tom Lowe.
The Barnstormers Tour salutes the daring young men and women who ventured cross-country in the bi-planes during the 20’s and 30’s to seek fame and fortune. Now, the tours pilots are retirees looking to soar in their golden years.
“It's great,” said pilot Steve Roth. “You can see and smell everything. It's fun being with my colleagues. It's a good camaraderie and it's fun going place to place meeting new people.”
For some old-timers, the nostalgic aircraft stirs up some good memories.
“I always wanted to be a pilot when I was a kid,” said Barnstormers visitor Robert Wooding. “My first plane ride was in one like this. I was in the front cockpit.”
Now a whole new generation is being introduced to the vintage planes to dream of maybe one day soaring the skies.
The tour will continue Tuesday at the Great Bend Airport. It will then take off for a two-day stop at Wichita’s Jabara Airport Wednesday and Thursday. Admission is free, but it will cost $50 for a ride if you want to ride in one of the planes.
